I'm back! I had to reinstall Windows, and now I'm just trying to get everything back.

The good news is that no non-Windows data seems to have been lost, but it did create a new user account. In my C:/Documents/settings directory, the old account was still there.

I had to reinstall the wireless adapter, but I didn't have to reinstall Chrome.

What happened?

I don't know!

A lot of the system files were missing, svchost was blowing up (using all my memory), and when I went to restart it wouldn't boot up!

Sounds like a potential virus. Download Microsoft Security Essentials and run that, assuming you're not on Windows 8, where it's included under Windows Defender.

I'm not kidding, either. MSE is one of the best AV programs out there, and it's totally free.

Yeah I know about MSE, and I've had it for at least a year, and I had it at today when this shit happened!

I'm on XP

Make sure your definitions are up to date, and run a full scan. real-time monitoring won't always catch things, and by default it only scans your OS drive.

Also, and I'm sure I'll get shit for saying this, but I would upgrade to 7 or 8. XP has been around for a very long time, and there are going to be far more exploits targeting it, especially now that (I believe) MS has stopped developing security updates for XP.

Who are you again? You were gone? Hmm...okay.

:p

Glad it all worked out. [Had to reinstall Windows? Thanks Obama.]

Yeah I know. I'd love to get a new computer soon, but I thought I could get by with this one for a few more months!

Hmm. If your computer is especially old, it could also be a hard drive issue, or any number of other hardware faults.

The program Speed Fan can run health tests on hard drives if you're interested.

Yeah, it's about 10 years old, built September 2003

If only I had seen this prior to the reinstall! But of course I couldn't access it though :(

Are all the parts that old too, or have you replaced things?

I would back up any important data immediately, just in case. External hard drive or large dropbox account would work.

This is the first time I've noticed your username is DOGISBADOB and not DOGISABOB.

I bought the computer in 2006, upgraded RAM in 2007 (from 512MB to 2GB), and replaced the DVD drive with a DVD-RW burner. I don't think these upgrades caused my problems as they've been working well for years.

Like anything else, computer parts can fail with time. Hard Drives especially, with their very-fast-moving parts, can wear out, and it only takes a little loss of precision to cause total failure.
